½ûÂþÌìÌà Quinn Brophy

Quinn Brophy is a graduating senior of the Arts in the Expanded Field program at ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ. Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, they currently reside in Raynham, Massachusetts where they enjoy gardening, legos, collecting Pokemon cards, and painting. Their curiosity and wonder of miniature life comes from their childhood fascination with tiny dollhouse accessories. Quinn channels their whimsical spirit into these tiny spaces, using them as an outlet, and a blueprint, for the perfect “pocket-sized” world.

Statement

What if we were all miraculously shrunk down to the size of bugs? I liked to think of this question often as a child, being drawn towards things smaller than their real life counterparts. My fascination grew beyond collecting small trinkets, to instead fabricating worlds of my own creation. The larger things become, the harder they are to control and contain, which is why the entire focus of my work lies in miniature dioramas and sculptures.

I aim to create spaces that play on scale and setting, ones where tiny details unique to myself are hidden. I utilize a combination of found objects that end up repurposed, as well as wood and clay. Some inspirations for my work include Tanaka Tatsuya and Joshua Smith. In the discovery of creating these worlds, I found a certain charm in having them suspended from the ceiling, something I will be exploring in some upcoming pieces. This most recent collection focuses on spaces from before and after, with certain pieces having context surrounding environmental issues.
