Statement

In this thesis Jay martin looked at Nashoba Valley Hospital in Ayer MA, to propose a new facility in their reopening. Jay has been inspired from family and friends who worked at the hospital before its closer in 2024 and wanted to creat a project that highlights the benefit reopening the hospital could have to the community. In this project Jay proposed a maternity center to open its doors in the existing dermatology department. This center would allow patients to create their own birth plan according to their wants and needs. The family is equipped with three different types of mastery room to give a vibrate of options to each patient. The proposal also offers stations like midwife and a doula assistant for anyone who wants it as part of their plan.

The Maternity Center is inspired by the Water Arum flower that grows right in its back yard. Through each space there are natural earth tone elements that allow each person entering to connect with the space and make patients feel like their not in a sterile hospital but almost a home. Biophilic design is huge in this project and that can be seen in each space, weather it be pattern wallpaper in the shape of leaves, or nature colors and elements being brought into the space. The maternity center that is proposed will allow the community to travel 20 mins to their birth center instead of the 30/60min commute most people in the area would have to take.

As an interior architects and design major I have been able to explore every aspect of the field and learn what I truly connect with. I have fallen in love with institutional and healthcare design, and after my time here I plan on perusing a career in that field. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has enabled me to be a better design and more confidant with my design choices. I feel confidant in stepping out into the work field now as a professional designer.
