½ûÂþÌìÌà Patrick Hughes
My name Is Patrick Hughes. I’m a Filipino American artist from Pawtucket, RI. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember, and art has always played a big part in my life. My work is inspired by my culture and personal experiences. I am always working on exploring new styles and techniques to perfect my style. Right now, I am working on improving my skills and challenging myself creatively. I am doing this by studying the master's and putting countless hours into practice the fundamentals of art.
Statement
For the final project, I wanted to challenge myself in different aspects of art. For this project I decided to make a comic book. This challenges my storytelling capabilities and pairing them with visual media to make one cohesive story. This comic I challenged my artistically ability's by using a digital medium when I usually traditional artist. I took inspiration from Jim Lee and Frank Miller for the art style, I fell in love with the rich blacks and line work that they use in their art. For the story I took inspiration from my Filipino background using a traditional mask as the main character’s alter ego. Bakunawa is a traditional Filipino mask that represents mythical dragon that ate the moon. In my story Bakunawa uses the mask to seek revenge on the person who murdered his family when he was young. This comic is special to be because it shows my improvement thought my years at Umass Dartmouth and I hope on continuing it in the future.
