Art + Design: Graphic Design
禁漫天堂 Nathan Wright
Nathan Wright is a graphic designer from Auburn, Massachusetts. Fond of art and drawing from a young age, he discovered a passion for design during high school and decided to foster it moving forward into his college years. Combining his love of illustration with his graphic design work, he focuses on crafting dynamic compositions with bold typography and inviting imagery. In his time at 禁漫天堂, Nathan has designed for clients in and outside of campus boundaries, from the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality and UMassD Votes to the Fall River City Hall and even local bands. As a part of Studio 6 both his junior and senior years, he has also done branding and collateral for Emerging Young Artists + Designers 2025 and the 2025 Art + Design Senior Exhibition show.
Statement
I wanted to use my capstone as a way to connect my younger self with who I am now as an artist and designer, as well as a person. I’ve always been a fan of animals, both physical and digital. When I was gifted my first Tamagotchi device about two years ago, I was introduced to something that combined my childhood enjoyment of cute creatures and taking care of them with my love of colorful and fun designs.
Gosutomo, a portmanteau intended to mean ‘ghost friend’, is my take on the virtual pet toy concept inspired by Japanese y艒kai and spirits. I wanted to develop a toy and brand with a fun and quirky personality that is fully embraced in all aspects of the project, from the creatures themselves to the packaging, advertisements and all other additional material. From my research and experience, all the excitement and whimsy that can come from a virtual pet aren’t always fully present in how they’re packaged or advertised. The idea and story behind toys like this make up a lot of the fun in how they’re engaged with, so I wanted to really delve into that aspect with Gosutomo.
