Statement
My senior thesis explores the adaptive reuse of the abandoned Attleboro High School in Attleboro, MA, transforming it into a memory care facility designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The project aims to create a supportive environment that integrates historical preservation with modern design strategies to cater to the unique needs of residents in their end-of-life stages.
The concept emphasizes creating spaces that are not only functional but also therapeutic, drawing from research on sensory stimulation, comfort, and safety. The design prioritizes human-centered principles that foster independence, connection, and a sense of dignity for residents while also providing a welcoming environment for their families and caregivers.
This thesis demonstrates that thoughtful, adaptive design can significantly improve the experience of those with memory impairments, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to care.
