Art + Design: Interior Architecture + Design
½ûÂþÌìÌà Victoria Varao
Victoria Varao is a Commonwealth Honors student at ½ûÂþÌìÌà Dartmouth, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture, Design, and Sustainability Studies. She sees Interior Architecture + Design as a field that bridges creative thinking with technical problem-solving, allowing her to craft spaces that are both functional and inspiring. Her academic journey has led her to explore strategies like mixed-use development, historic preservation, and behavioral health design, informing her ability to create thoughtful, people-centered spaces.
Statement
My thesis, Viridian Point Collective, reimagines a historic building in downtown New Bedford as a sustainable mixed-use development deeply rooted in the city's whaling history. Inspired by the journey of a whaler, this design concept incorporates elements of a whaler's experiences at sea into each space, which includes apartments, a co-working lounge, a retail shop, a café and market, outdoor gathering spaces, and more. By incorporating historic preservation, sustainability, and thoughtful mixed-use strategies, this project creates a live, work, and play environment that tells the story of New Bedford’s maritime history, while supporting a community-centered and sustainable future.
