Art + Design: Graphic Design | Fashion Design Minor

Monika Janina Kristjánsdóttir

Monika Janina Kristjánsdóttir is an international honor student-athlete from Iceland, graduating this spring with a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Fashion Design. Raised in the remote village of Þingeyri, she developed a deep respect for nature and learned resilience, self-discipline, and prudence from the land itself—qualities that continue to shape her creative work.

Monika thrives on challenges and embraces failure as part of the process, constantly pushing herself in design, fashion, volleyball, and life. She made history as ’s first two-time volleyball champion, all while maintaining a strong academic record. Her design work has been recognized with awards from the Universal Design Symposium and the Little East Conference logo competition.

Statement

Watrwöol is a slow-fashion design project that merges graphic and fashion design to confront the climate crisis and rethink the ethics of fast fashion. Drawing from biomimicry, traditional practices, material innovation, and storytelling, it explores interdisciplinary design as a path toward sustainability.

The project experiments with natural fibers like seaweed and wool, and integrates recycled materials such as discarded fishing nets. Techniques including felting, weaving, and digital fabrication honor historical craftsmanship while embracing modern technology—reducing waste and cultivating environmental balance.

Watrwöol challenges fast fashion's extractive systems, advocating for a slower, more responsible approach that values environmental stewardship and cultural continuity. It invites audiences to rethink consumption, take responsibility, and reconsider their relationship with the natural world.
