Statement
Figgy and the Lost Talisman is a picture book about a dog named Figgy who is just as gullible as he is kind. Believing he is cursed, he sets off on a quest to undo it, only to discover he was never cursed at all. He overcomes his insecurities and helps an unexpected new friend.
With the rise of AI and soulless children’s content, it felt more important than ever to create something AI will never achieve: a story made with love and a human behind it. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up with such impactful media. Kiki’s Delivery Service, a film by Studio Ghibli and Just Dog, a book by Hiawyn Oram, are a couple of examples. I so desperately want the next generation to have meaningful media as well. I want them to read my book at lunch and see themselves reflected back in my characters. Figgy’s world is informed by different parts of my personality, including struggles with disabilities and queer identities, that I hope shine through to the right people.
