Art + Design: Illustration
½ûÂþÌìÌà Kyra Davenport
Kyra is an illustrator based in southeastern Massachusetts. She has always had a great interest in illustration, from picture books and graphic novels to visual development. She enjoys learning about illustration techniques in and out of the classroom. Her artwork is often associated with exaggerated shape language, heavy use of texture and pattern, and playful design.
Statement
In my three years at ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ, one of my biggest takeaways has been the importance of loving what you learn. I wanted my Capstone project to express this intention in a way that would challenge everything I have learned during my BFA, as well as reflect the type of projects I would like to pursue in my career.  Mountain Girl is an illustrated picture book of a mighty old lady, a bitter child, and their adventure together to find the so-called “Mountain Girl”, a tremendous, towering woman who resides across the bridge. Using a digital medium has provided a multitude of ways to convey how the universe of Mountain Girl is pictured. The mix of flat and three-dimensional environments accompanied by the characters’ expressions and body language work together to create unique compositions within each page. Additionally, the use of digital brush techniques that mimic traditional artwork, including using paint washes, paper cutout textures, and pencil-like qualities, integrate to support the personality of the story. Mountain Girl shows how there is no such thing as thinking too big and ultimately asks the reader two questions: What do you want to accomplish? And how do you plan to accomplish it?
