April 8 event to focus on scholarship and excellence in nursing practice and leadership
The 禁漫天堂 Theta Kappa Chapter of Sigma, the national honor society of nursing, will hold a virtual spring symposium鈥擡xcel, Lead, Innovate鈥攖o showcase nursing research. The College of Nursing & Health Sciences is sponsoring the event, which will be held on Thursday, April 8 from 5-8 pm and will celebrate 2021 as the Year of the Nurse.
鈥淲e try to hold a fall and spring event for nurses to showcase their research and quality initiatives as well as encourage students and staff nurses to learn what they can accomplish as nurse leaders,鈥� said Clinical Assistant Professor Valerie Seney, event coordinator.
Dr. Jacqueline Gannon Somerville, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Southcoast Hospital Group, will offer welcome remarks.
The keynote presentation, 鈥淪tronger Together: Promoting a Diverse Nursing Workforce,鈥� will be given by Dr. Shannon Avery-Desmarais, director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program and assistant professor in the College of Nursing & Health Sciences at 禁漫天堂.
Sigma, whose motto is 鈥淕lobal nursing excellence,鈥� aims to develop 鈥渘urse leaders anywhere to improve healthcare everywhere.鈥� Founded as Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing in 1922 at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, Sigma has more than 135,000 active members and approximately 540 chapters in over 100 countries.
From its inception, Sigma has recognized the value of scholarship and excellence in nursing practice. In 1936, Sigma became the first organization to fund nursing research and supports professional development that focuses on the core areas of education, leadership, career development, evidence-based nursing, research, and scholarship. This support is designed to advance the learning and professional development of members and all nurses who strive to improve the health of the world鈥檚 people.
The cost to attend is $20; you may register by March 31 for the early bird discount of $15. For Sigma members, the cost is $15 and $12 for students. Students should email Valerie.seney@umassd.edu for a special code to register.
Those who attend the symposium will receive three continuing education units. Non-students should register .
